Green, Pink & More Green

The weather here's been a bit unstable, up and down with a few unexpected twists.  I have a lot of plants that need the daily temperatures to come up about 5 more degrees before they'll be comfortable going back out on the patio after the long winter.  I also have some seedlings that are too small and vulnerable to go out.  So my dining room table's become a sort of garden staging ground, which is just fine with me.

I got the vintage wire basket at the Brooklyn Flea for $20---it folds up flat, which made getting it home a lot easier on the train.  Inside is Creeping Myrtle, a White Lady Hellebore, cilantro, a couple of succulents and a lantana that seems to have come back from the dead this spring but was getting hammered outside by the winds and rain.  Behind all that verdure is a jade plant, some lavender, and a dwarf Meyer lemon tree.  And just out of frame: breakfast radishes, peppers, purple basil, garlic chives, love-lies-bleeding, night phlox, snail flower, moonflower and night scented stock seedlings.  They're all growing fast and should be ready to transplant by the end of the month.

Beyond all the gardening, I've tried out a couple of new recipes.  First I made blood orange and Meyer lemon marmalade.

Then I got crazy and made strawberry ice cream.  I used to think strawberry was a super boring ice cream flavor, but fresh from the machine, I think I might actually like it more than chocolate.  I know, sacrilege.

My last household development this week was that my heirloom tomatoes arrived from Seed Savers.  I got Italian redsGold Medal yellows, and Tasty Evergreens.  To the left is a hydrangea.

I had to stop myself after three different kinds, because LOOK.  The names alone are just awesome.  Trucker's Favorite.  Moonglow.  Black Sea Man.  Cream Sausage!  I keep telling myself there's always next year, and that I don't need a goji berry plant (I want one sooooo much) or a collection of 12 succulent plants to put in a terrarium (this will probably eventually happen).

This year I'm prepared for any pests that might come my way, after working my way through a few books with tips on ways to eliminate them with organic solutions (milk, soap, etc.).  But I'm pretty sure that the biggest pest I'll have to face can be lured away with a cookie.  She's not getting any unchaperoned time outside anyway, as I don't want her eating anything and getting sick.
