Ever since my last trip to the botanical garden in the Bronx, I've been a wee bit obsessed with starting a little garden of my own. We have two balcony spaces off our apartment, and we have southern exposure, so the light is really good for plants. And I love the idea of looking out my window and seeing lots and lots of green and flowers, not to mention enjoying the privacy screening and air filtration that plants provide.
So I bought my first little tree. It's a 'Beauty of Moscow' lilac. Currently it's about 3' high but should grow to 10-12', which is perfect for the space. The smell of lilac blossoms is heavenly, one of my favorite smells in the world. I have this guy on the front balcony.
I also got two columbines---a blue and white and a red and white. They live in the kitchen window.
Here's my 'Hanakisoi' peony. Again, this should be a great size for a balcony when fully grown. At the moment, it's just a little baby.
Keeping a watchful eye on the peony is my grand madam, my jade plant, that I've had forever. She's taken a bizarre shape in the last year or so, but I love her just the same.
A perky little zinnia holds down the fort on the back balcony.
And I have seeds for three different kinds of forget-me-nots, as well as lantanas, snowdrops, and poppies. I need more dirt!
