Sweet potatoes before:
Sweet potatoes after:
A pound of dehydrated sweet potato treats for dogs go for somewhere between $8-15 a pound, but I was able to make two pounds for $6, including the cost of electricity to run the dehydrator. So it turns out to be a pretty substantial savings, especially over time for two dogs.
To prepare the potatoes for dehydrating, I cut them into various shapes and sizes using a mandoline and a regular knife. I soaked the sweet potato pieces in water and then steamed them briefly in batches, returning them to a bowl full of ice water and the juice of half a lemon to cool. Then they went into the dehydrator for about 12 hours on the veggie setting.
The dogs love them. They're not as sinewy and tough as rawhide, but they do require some work on the dog's part to gnaw and chew. And apparently they're good for their teeth. So, good all around.
